Running on a Chess Board

AI FOMO

“Now, here, you see, it takes all the running you can do, to keep in the same place. If you want to get somewhere else, you must run at least twice as fast as that!”

With AI there seems no end to the rat-race of benchmarks and possibilities. We need to run faster otherwise we will fall behind. But the blind-spot question is, why are we running?

Those who are most afraid of AI are those who fear we will miss the bandwagon.

But we should not run after AI neither should we fear the leaving bandwagon. We should use AI as a tool to help us in the running, to reach societal goals like community, equality, and human purpose. By doing so, we do not need to fear for our jobs, we do not need to fear the future. For this we need to start asking different, better questions, without prompting.

In our adoration of and wonder about AI we are more and more forgetting what we value as human beings, sacrificing all to keep running. But it is not what we can do for AI, it is what AI can do for us. If not, we just keep on running like headless chickens but not going anywhere except for a different spot on the chessboard.
